The Putten Two

Miscarriage of justice

In the nineties Europe was enthralled with the unfolding news of the miscarriages of justice that were developing in England.  No one thought that cases like the Guildford Four and the Birmingham Six could possibly happen on Dutch soil but nothing could be further from the truth. In 1994 a young woman was raped and killed in the tiny village of Putten. Two men were brought in by police and confessed to the crime. The men were convicted but claimed their innocence saying the confessions were coerced under police pressure.  The high court refused to review or over turn the conviction.  Peter R. DeVries catching the scent of police misconduct delved into the case with the ferocity of a pit bull. He uncovered evidence of the men’s innocence.  Due to his hard work it was the first time since 1926 that a sentence of this nature had been revised freeing the Putten Two.
